A photographer with a sense of history. Occasionally, people bring film cameras to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. He is photographing mallard ducks off-frame, though one web-footed bird can be seen trying to escape. This guy's setup reminded me of the Mimiya Sekor that I used in the early 1980s, my first exposure to a 35mm SLR. I liked that old camera, and I liked the vagaries of film. The convenience of digital photography is too good to pass up, but when I am out in the field I sometimes miss the cold metallic weight of the Mimiya, that satisfying click of the mechanical shutter at each shot and the pull of the film winding lever. And there is even some nostalgia for the eager anticipation after the film had been turned in for development. This photographer is in the parking lot of the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. On many a morning a person could probably spend several hours photographing birds around the lot. Often, the first thing I hear when I pop the car door open are the sweet songs of chickadees.
